Electroacupuncture can help dogs with disk disease.
What’s the evidence?
In several previous studies, electroacupuncture is able to reduce pain level, shorten recovery time, reduce recurrent rate in dogs suffering from thoracolumbar intervertebral disc disease. It can be used alone, on top of medical treatment, or after surgery.
How can electroacupuncture help my pet?
Intervertebral disc disease most commonly happens to chondrodystrophic (long-backed with short legs) dogs in their middle age. Commonly affected breeds include Dachshund, Welsh Corgi, Beagle, French Bulldog, etc. It results in pain, variable level of paralysis and even incontinence. It’s not uncommon that they have several episodes throughout their life. Treatment with conventional medicine generally includes strict rest, steroids, pain control, and, in severe cases, surgery. Electroacupuncture can help reduce their pain level, shorten recovery time and decrease relapse rate with or without conventional treatments. Electroacupuncture is a very safe modality with few (if any) no side effects. The number and frequency of treatments depends on the severity of the back pain.
